terms Flashcards
Resistance form (FDP) definition based on glossary of prosthodontic terms:
the features of a tooth preparation that enhance the stability of a restoration and resists dislodgment along an axis other than the path of placement
Retention form definition based on glossary of prosthodontic terms:
feature of a tooth preparation that resists dislodgment of a crown in a vertical direction or along the path of placement
retruded contact definition based on glossary of prosthodontic terms:
contact of a tooth or teeth along the retruded path of closure; initial contact of a tooth or teeth during closure around a transverse horizontal axis
Semi adjustable articulator:
an articulator that allows adjustment to simulate mandibular movements; syn, Class III articulator
bilateral balanced articulation defintion
The bilateral, simultaneous posterior occlusal contact of teeth in maximal intercuspal position and eccentric positions
bimanual manipulation technique:
a method for manipulation of the mandible by using both thumbs on the chin and the fingers on the inferior border of the mandible to guide the jaw into centric relation
centric relation : a….. rshp, independent of… ; in which the ….. articulate in the MOST…. position against the …. slope of ….
in this position, … is restricted to purely a …. movement, from this …. ; …..; ….. rshp, the pt can make…., …., and …. m/m
it is clinically, …., ….., uRRs…; reference position
a maxillomandibular relationship, independent of tooth contact, in which the condyles articulate in the MOST anterior-superior position against the posterior slopes of the articular eminences;
in this position, the mandible is restricted to a purely rotary movement; from this unstrained, physiologic, maxillomandibular relationship, the patient can make vertical, lateral or protrusive movements;
it is a clinically useful, repeatable and STABLE reference position
Closest speaking space
Space between the anterior teeth when the patient is speaking; not be more or less than 1 to 2 mm of clearance between the incisal edges of the teeth when the patient is unconsciously repeating the letter “S.”
Long centric articulation:
intercuspal contact area
Gothic arch tracer:
device attached to opposing arches, and shape of tracing depends on relative location of the marking point and the tracing table; the apex of a properly made tracing is considered to indicate centric relation
Lucia jig
anterior deprogramming device for recording CR
centric record:;
syn, CENTRIC RELATION RECORD
ala-tragus line a line running from the …border of the… to the …border on the …. of the ear; it is frequently used, with a third point on the opposing …., for the purpose of establishing the……; ideally the ….. is considered to be parallel to the …..
The occlusal plane is at an angle of approximately …degrees relative to the ….horizontal plane, when viewed in the mid-sagittal plane; syn,…..LINE
a line running from the inferior border of the ala of the nose to the superior border on the tragus of the ear; it is frequently used, with a third point on the opposing tragus, for the purpose of establishing the ala-tragus plane; ideally the ala-tragus plane is considered to be parallel to the occlusal plane.
The occlusal plane is at an angle of approximately 10 degrees relative to the Frankfort horizontal plane, when viewed in the mid-sagittal plane; syn, CAMPER’S LINE
Artificial teeth should …. be above the…. of ….. and is a guide to posterior occlusal plane on mandible.
not be above the 2/3 of retromolar pad
ENGAGE a …mm undercut for cobalt chromium [U/C not so deep to prevent …]
ENGAGE a 0.25mm undercut for cobalt chromium [U/C not so deep to prevent stress concentration
I-bar clasp on buccal surface → engages …..-inch undercut on … surface.
0.01’’ inch undercut on mid-buccal surface.
If have soft tissue undercuts, shallow sulcus or high B frenum prevent I-bar use → use? … or …
but if insufficient … clearance use….(undercut is adjacent to..)
RPA (Akers’ clasp) or Reverse Circlet (if hv sufficient occl clearance)
or if INSUFFICIENT OCCL clearance, use hair pin clasp(undercut is adjacent to edentulous space
Disadv of hair pin clasp
Covers large amount of tooth surface and can be prone to caries or decalcification.
RPI - mesial rest function?
support and eliminate ‘ pump-handle’ effect of distal rest on abutment (tipping tooth backwards= mobility and bone loss, denture m/m)
stress releasing clasps eg for what cases?
combination clasp - RPA - periodontally compromised.
direct retainer examples: 9x
- Clasps (C-clasps and roaches)
- Guide planes
- Soft tissue undercuts (Flanges)
- Fitting surface of denture base – physical forces, Cohesion, adhesion, cm2 tension
- Muscular control
- Magnets
- Springs
- Precision attachments
- Implants
Purpose and Design Objectives of major connector:
…. denture components, provides rigidity for ….., and ensures ……. via broad distribution of stress.
should be 3x…
support …retention and resist… under fxnal load
Unifies denture components, provides rigidity for stability, and ensures cross-arch stability via broad distribution of stress.
Should be rigid, comfortable, + hygienic. Support indirect retention and resist flexing under functional load.
Minimum ?mm of sulcus depth required for I-bar approach.
9 mm
c0ntraindication of RPI:
< 9mm of sulcus depth ; soft tissue u/cut or high frenal attachments.
