What is the focus of nursing?
The focus of nursing includes health promotion and well-being, prevention as well as control of chronic conditions. Its four broad aims are to promote health, prevent ill health, restore health, and promote coping rehabilitation after radical health changes.

How is nursing described?
Nursing is described as a profession, discipline, and science based on a body of knowledge that can be applied in the clinical setting and is continually expanded by ongoing research.

What does the term ‘nurse’ mean?
Nurse means someone who tended or nourished the young, sick, or infirm. Today, the definition is wider, but nurturing and caring remain at the core of nursing.

What is the duty of care in nursing?
Nurses have a duty of care to patients and visitors, which is the legal obligation to take reasonable care to avoid causing harm to a person.

What is holistic nursing care?
Holistic nursing care considers the patient’s physical, social, spiritual, and psychological dimensions, as well as cultural and religious aspects. It includes care of the family and the community within which the individual functions.
Caring that involves looking after the whole
person is holistic and healing and based on the
principles of humanism. Holistic care recognizes
the uniqueness of each human being, their
individuality, personality and huma frailty. Caring
for physical, psychological, and spiritual
dimensions. Requires the nurse to think beyond
the concept of cure, which is based on scientific
facts and technical competence and think more
towards person-centered care.

Culturally sensitive nursing care Needs of a patient must be met in a culturally
appropriate manner, or at least show respect for
the patient’s culture and does not give offence.

The helping (therapeutic) relationship Foundation on which nurse and patient can work
in alliance to identify issues that are affecting
them and that require change. Allows the patient
to move from their current state of ill-health,
distress or need to their desired state of
maximum attainable health, well-being, and
strength.
Relies on rapport, empathy, trust, genuiness,
warmth and positive regard. Requires the nurse
to have active listening skills and interpersonal
skills.

Patient
Patient or client The person, a patient or client, health consumer,
human being, individual or other is the important
reason for the existence of nursing practice.

Recipient of care – may imply passivity or
inequality in the relationship with professionals
used in clinical setting.
Client – active recipient of care, the perception is
one of greater equality in relationship with
professionals, term used in community-based
settings.
