THEOPHANY
an appearance of god to a person or group
- in genesis god speaks directly to humans
- in exodus there are more theophanies
burning bush “Moses, Moses!” god calls him by name
mount sinai - god appears in fire smoke thunder to deliver the 10 commandments
pillar of fire and cloud - god leads the isrealites through the wilderness
YAM SUF
sea of reeds (Red Sea) where Moses parts the waters in exodus
“stretch out your hand over the sea”
YHWH’s victory over oppression
MONOTHEISM
belief in one god
HENOTHEISM
worship of one god while acknowledging others exist
APOSTASY
turning away from YHWH to worship other false gods
EXAMPLES:
golden calf - while Moses is on sinai to receive the 10 commandments, Israelites make a golden calf and worship it..
Aaron says: “these are your gods, o Israel”
god is furious and Moses smashes the tablets breaking the covenant
BAAL WORSHIP- their punishment is plagues war and exile
HEREM
“DEVOTION TO DESTRUCTION”
EXAMPLES:
Jericho - city is destroyed and there were no survivors left
Saul and the amalekites - Sal is punished for not fully obeying herem
NAZIRITE
someone dedicated to god with special vows
RULES:
- no alcohol, no touching dead bodies, no cutting hair
Samson breaks every rule - touches dead lion, drinks wine, and his hair is cut by Delilah
- his strength is from god not just his hair
JUDGES CYCLE OF SIN
- Israel sins by worshipping false gods
- god punishes them (oppression by enemies)
- Israel cries out to god
- god raises a judge (leader) to deliver them
- Israel is free.. til they sin again
