Terms Flashcards
Aerial Perspective
the disappearance of objects into the distance; they become smaller and less distinct. Values have less contrast far away,
Cast shadow
a dark edged shadow caused when an object blocks a light source, it softens and lightens as it extends away from the object.
Charcoal
vine charcoal is usually a birch or willow branches burned to carbon. Less permanent
Charcoal pencil
compressed charcoal encased in wood. More permanent
Chiaroscuro
subtle gradations from light to dark that usually imply form. We are practicing chiaroscuro in this class
Composition
orderly arrangement of individual parts into a coherent whole
Contour
edges found around and within an object, shown by a change of value, edges, color, ect.
contrast
the relative difference between examples of any one element ( size, value, texture, color, ect)
Ellipse
a circle in perspective
Emphasis
focus on one part of a form or composition through contrast or directional lines
eye level/horizon line
the level of the viewer’s eye in relation to the object. The horizon line is at eye level
five value scale
set of 5 values in a drawing that represents highlight, light, mid-tone, core/form shadow, and reflected light
form
an area, which is three-dimensional or has implied dimension
Graphite
a form of crystallized carbon, which is used of different elements
Harmony
the relationship between unity and variety: a unity of different elements
Highlight
where light source hits an object: the lightest area of an object
LIne
the path of a moving point
Linear Perspective
the appearance of depths or space through the use of converging lines
Lost and Found edges
edges may disappear when values are similar and reappear when values at edges are contrasted
Mass
three-dimensional bulk of an object
Modeling
creating an impression of 3 dimensional volumes through gradations of value or color in shading
Negative space
space around or enclosed by the positive shape/form
outline
the line describing the outside edge of an object; tends to be 2 dimensional
overlap
one shape covering part of another creating an illusion of distance or space
