Angina Pectoris
Chest pain
Coronary Artery Disease
Condition that narrows or blocks the arteries, reducing blood flow therefore limiting the amount of oxygen delivered to heart
Who is at risk of developing CAD
Heredity, age, hypertension, obesity, lack of exercise, elevated blood levels of high cholesterol and triglycerides, and cigarette smoking
Nitroglycerin
A prescribed medication that dilates blood vessels and veins
Occlusion
A blockage of blood in a vessel
Thrombus
A formation caused by clots and debris from plaque that can become an occlusion
Embolism
A clot that breaks loose and occludes the flow of blood somewhere downstream in a smaller artery
Acute Myocardial
Infarction (AMI)
Often called “heart attack”, a blockage of a coronary artery by the form of a thrombus or an embolism
Dysrhythmia
Harmful changes to the hearts rate, rhythm, and pumping ability caused by abnormal electrical distribution through the heart
Fibrinolytics
Treatment for AMI which dissolves clots in the coronary artery
Beta blocker
A group of medications that are given to slow the rate of the heart, found effective for patients with AMI
Ischemia
Reduced blood flow
Symptoms of Myocardial Infarction
Chest, jaw, neck, arm, epigastrium discomfort. Nausea / vomitting, syncope, sweating
what should you administer for a suspected AMI patient
Aspirin and Nitroglycerin
what is heart failure (congestive heart failure)
A progressive heart condition in which the heart is unable to pump blood with normal efficiency
What is pedal edema
swelling in the ankles and feet sometimes resulting from a failure in the right ventricle
What is pulmonary edema
fluid shifting into the lungs sometimes resulting from a failure in the left ventricle (ex. crackles heart in auscultation)
What is an Anuerysm
A cardiovascular disorder that stems from weakened sections in the arterial wall sometimes ballooning out which can eventually burst
What is Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS)
A condition brought on by a sudden reduction or blockage of blood to the heart. AKA Cardiac compromise
What is JVD
Jugular vein distension
