Push Factors
things that push someone to leave their home country. (E.g. religious persecution, famine, disease).
Pull factors
Things that pull people to a country (e.g job opportunities because of rapid industrialization)
Nativism
Protect the interest of native born americans though anti-immigrant groups and policies.
Assimilation
To force someone to join the customs and culture of another culture.
Chinese exclusion act of 1882
Components: Prevented chinese immigration.
Impacted: it was the first act to limit immigration of a certain nationality.
Ellis Island
Opened from 1892-1954, roughly 12 million people immigrated through, it was mostly Europeans coming through the New York harbor
Angel Island
Opened 1910-1940, mostly Asian and South American immigrants. Around 1 million people, off the coast of California.
