Plot of the movie
Fabula
Story of the movie; everything mentioned that isn’t seen in the film
Open frame composition
Viewed as a window into the world of the film (ex. people can walk in and out of the frame)
Closed frame composition
Where the frame ends, the world ends. It is a perfectly contained box.
Symbol
Communities orient themselves around them or are widely known and acknowledged (a cross symbolizes Christianity)
Metaphor
Relevant to the current moment, crafted to specifically relate to the circumstance of the character. **story driven
Allegory
When a story or film is representing a different but related real life situation.
Objective / Unmotivated camera shot
Independent of the character, camera moves to show the space
Subjective / Motivated/ Tracking camera shot
Camera follows a character.
False Focalization
Making the audience believe a camera movement is objective until it’s revealed to be subjective
Walla
Indiscernible vocalization (adults speaking in peanuts)
Focalization
Point of view camera shot, audience sees what the character sees
Chiaroscuro
Stark contrast of light and dark in composition
American Montage
A film sequence relying on editing to condense or expand action, space or time
Composition
The relationship of lines, volumes, masses and shapes at a single instant in a representation.
