Right
Legal, moral, or social entitlement that citizens can expect mainly from government
Freedom
The right to conduct ones affairs without governmental interference
Entrench
To protect and guarantee a right or freedom by ensuring that it can only be changed by an amendment to the constitution
Notwithstanding Clause
S. 33 of the Canadian Charter of Freedom and freedoms, which allows federal and provincial governments to pass legislations that is exempt from s. 2 and ss. 7-15
Interveners
third-party participants in a legal proceedings; also called “friends of the court”
Extraditions
Surrendering an accused person to another jurisdiction to stand trial

Stereotyping

A qualification that would be considered discriminatory but is necessary for proper job performance
Affirmative action
Giving advantages to groups who have been discriminated against in the past
Constructive discrimination
Employment policies that inadvertently exclude certain individuals, resulting in discrimination
Direct Discrimination
An act of discrimination practiced openly
Ex. Refusing service or employment from someone based on skin colour or race or religon
Accommodate
Eliminate or adjust requirements or conditions to enable a person to carry out the essential duties of an activity or job
Harassment
persistent behaviour that violates the human rights of a victim
Sexual Harassment
Unwelcome sexual contact, remarks, leering, demands for dates, requests for sexual favors, and displays of sexually offensive pictures and graffiti
Poisoned Environment
An uncomfortable or disturbing atmosphere created by the negative comments or behaviors of others

To protect people against certain forms of corporal punishment and physical suffering

Responsible Government
The people we elect to make laws and govern us are responsible to us for what they do in parliament and the legislature of the provinces. If we aren’t satisfied with the things they do, or the law they pass, at the next election, we vote for someone we think would do a better job
