Ecology
The study of interactions among organisms and their environments
Fisheries
The industry devoted to the catching, processing, and/or selling of fish, shellfish, or other aquatic animals
Carrying capacity
The population, density or weight of a species that a habitat can handle
By-catch
The incidental take of non-target species in a fishery
Escapement
That portion of a fish population that escapes predators fisheries, etc and is able to spawn naturally
Diadromous
Fish that use both marine and freshwater habitats during their life cycle
Catadromous
Fish that leave freshwater and migrate to the sea to spawn
Anadromous
Fish that leave the sea and migrate into freshwater habitats to spawn
Homing
To return to ones natal area from a distance
Olfaction
A fish’s sense of smell
Osmoregulation
The process by which a fish adjusts and maintains homeostatic (internal stability) control in a changing environment
Otolith
A fish’s ear stone. Can be used to assess age, growth, environmental change, etc
Iteroparous
Has the ability to spawn more than once
Semelelparous
Spawns only once in a lifetime, then dies
Fecundity
Number of eggs per female spawner
Milt
Sperm bearing fluid in fishes
Broodstock
Adult fish retained for spawning
Jack
Sexually mature salmon male that is one year younger than youngest female
Redd
Area of stream/lake bottom excavated by female salmonids during spawning
Taxonomy
The branch of science dealing with the systematic classification or organisms
Chinook/ King
Green upper body with brown/gold mid; spots on both lobes of tail, large spots on back
Coho/ Silver
Red lower body, hook nose
Pink/ Humpy
Big hump on back, green upper body, oval spots on tail
Chum/ Dog
Calico markings, no spots on tail or back
Sockeye/ Red
Distinctive red upper, large eye
