A poem’s shape–the way the words and lines are laid out on a page
Form
The main unit in a poem, vary in length, may or may not be a complete sentence
Line (verse)
Lines arranged in groups, functions like a paragraph does in prose
Stanza
Follow fixed rules, such as a set number of lines or a repeating pattern of rhythm or rhyme
Conventional (Traditional) Poem
May have rhyme, but their shapes and patterns may be unusual
Irregular (open)
Open form, but has a rhythm like everyday speaking, no regular rhyme, no regular rhythm
Free Verse
Position and appearance of words, capital letters, lines, and stanzas
Graphic Elements
The repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words in a line of poetry
Alliteration
The repetition of consonant sounds in the middle or ending of words in a line of poetry
Consonance
The repetition of vowel sounds of non rhyming words in a line of poetry
Assonance
The use of words whose sound echo their meanings
Onomatopoeia
The repetition of sounds at the end of words (usually at the end of the line)
Rhyme Scheme
A comparison between two unlike things
Metaphor
A comparison between two unlike things that contains the words like OR as
Simile
A description of an object, an animal, a place or an idea as if it were human or had human qualities
