Terms Flashcards
CT
Contact Time is the amount of time a disinfectant is in contact with something in order to be effective. Calculate FAC concentration (mg/L) x Time (minutes)
ex- 20ppm x 12.75 hrs =15300
Saturation Index
Calculation to determine if pool is balanced. Should equal between -0.3 and 0.3.
Alkalinity
The buffer.
The measure of the ability of the water to resist changes in pH. The higher the alkalinity the more difficult it is to adjust the level of pH.
Calcium Hardness
Total mineral content of pool water. Too much can cause scaling.
Combined Chlorine
Chlorine that has already reacted with organic matter and bacteria. Also called chloramines.
Cyanuric Acid
Chemical used to prevent decomposition of chlorine by UV light. Only in outdoor pools
ORP
Oxidation reduction potential. The activity or strength of oxidizers and reducers in relation to their concentration.
pH
measures acid and base levels of liquids. 7.0 is considered neutral.
Range is 7.2-7.8
Potassium monopersulfate
chemical compound that oxidizes organic contaminants in a pool. Used to reduce CC
Superchlorination
Adding high amounts of chlorine to pool increase FAC
Turnover
the rate at which the full volume of the pool takes to pass through the circulation system
Flow rate
the amount of water to pass by a given point during a certain amount of time
