Patient with a sudden flare-up or potentially severe issue who needs immediate care.
ACUTE
Patient’s vital signs are out of the normal range and patient may be unconscious.
CRITICAL
Status of a patient who requires hospital admission.
INPATIENT
A temporary status that allows patients to continue receiving care for a set amount of time in the hospital while the physician determines whether admission or discharge is best.
OBSERVATION
Status of a patient who is not admitted to a hospital for overnight care. This can include clinic visits, same-day surgeries, and one-day emergency room visits.
OUTPATIENT
One of the standard vitals signs. Measures the amount of force placed on a patient’s artery walls with each heartbeat.
BLOOD PRESSURE
Medical documentation that follows a patient throughout a healthcare facility . Includes medical history, diagnoses, tests results, dosage & timing of medications, & other relevant info.
CHART
A medical emergency, often cardiac arrest that requires immediate attention from a team of healthcare providers. A.K.A “Coding”
CODE BLUE
number of breaths a patient takes per minute
RESPIRATORY RATE
sample of something from a patient’s body (urine, blood, skin, tissue, etc.)
SPECIMEN
“Vitals” are basic indicators of a patient’s health that typically includes heart rate, respiratory rate, body temp, pain level, & blood pressure.

ABSCESS
a condition is which stomach produces little or no acid. It can affect digestion, cause stomach pain, & keep the body from absorbing vitamins & nutrients.
ACHLORYDIA
most advanced case of HIV which can severely weaken immune system.
ACQUIRED IMMUNODEFICIENCY SYNDROME (AIDS)
type of cancer that grows in the layer of tissue (epithelium) ex. breast cancer
ADENOCARCINOMA
a benign growth found in layer of cells that lines certain organs (epithelial cells)
ADENOMA
A term for “non-cancerous”

act of listening to sounds arising within organs (ex. heart, lungs) usually with stethoscope
AUSCULTATION
tooth or implant to which a fixed prosthesis is anchored
ABUTMENT
severe pain that occurs suddenly and usually lasts for a while
ACUTE PAIN

rare disease where a person cannot recognize objects, shapes, or people due to brain/neurological condition
AGNOSIA
fear & avoidance of public spaces & open spaces
AGORAPHOBIA
absence of melanin pigments in eyes, skin, & hair
ALBINISM
protein made by the liver. abnormal levels of this may indicate liver/kidney disease
ALBUMIN
high amounts of albumin in urine possibly indicating kidney dysfunction.
ALBUMINURIA
another term for gastrointestinal or digestive tract
ALIMENTARY CANAL
Chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart due to narrowing of arteries.
ANGINA
Severe allergic reaction. Causing symptoms spanning from itching & swelling, trouble breathing, convulsions, shock, and coma
ANAPHYLAXIS
Having lower than normal amount of RBC/hemoglobin leading to low energy, paleness, weakness, and other symptoms
ANEMIA
birth defect in which an infant is born w/o most of the brain or w/o skull bones covering the brain
ANENCEPHALY
bulge/swelling on a portion of blood vessel due to weakness in the wall of that vessel
ANEURYSM
abnormally LOW body temperature (<36.5 C)
