Allegory
A story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning.
Allusion
A word, phrase, or item that brings your thoughts to something outside of the book or an expression that comes to mind without mentioning it.
Annotation
A note of explanation or a comment added to text or a diagram
Audience
A group of people who gather together to listen or watch something.
Citation
A way to tell your reader that certain information came from a different source.
Claim
Stating that outcome or idea of something without actual proof
Counterargument
Rebuttal against your original argument
Direct characterization
The author describes the character out front
Dystopian fiction
uses characters to explore the dangerous effects of political and social structures of humanity’s failures. Ex: government control, environmental destruction, survival.
Fantasy
Unrealistic. The characters are looking for themselves, are on a personal journey, and there is normally an adventure.
Flashback
When a character remembers something that happened in the past
Foreshadowing
Giving a warning or indication of a future event
hyperbole
extreme exaggeration
imagery
descriptive or figurative language/ uses your senses

the author reveals the character’s appearance through actions, thoughts, or speech
irony

a comparison without using like or as
personification
giving human-like characteristics to something nonhuman
1st person pov
the narrator tells the story from their point of view
EX: night
2nd person pov
The reader is in the story and uses the word “you”
3rd person limited pov
The narrator talks about one specific person who we know everything about.
EX: Harry Potter
3rd person omniscient pov
the author writes the story with an all knowing mindset and knows what other characters are going through and thinking
Quote
repeating the words of someone else
satire
pointing out the flaws in society by making someone or something look ridiculous through humor
Science fiction
characters are searching for the truth and meaning in life and for their society. They must contain an element of reality and an element of science/technology.
Simile
a comparison using like or as
speculative fiction
The setting is somewhere not in the real world, and there are supernatural and futuristic elements. Includes many different genres of fiction.
Symbol
something that represents something else
transition
going from one point or plot in the story to another plot or point.
