Def population
In statistics, a population is a set of similar items or events which is of interest for some question or experiment
It can be thought of as the pool of individuals from which a statistical sample is drawn for a study
Def sample
A sample is a set of individuals or objects collected or selected from a statistical population by a defined procedure
The elements within the statistical sample are known as observations
Def sampling
Sampling is the selection of a subset (a statistical sample) of individuals from within a statistical population to estimate characteristics of the whole population.
Def variable
A variable is any characteristics, number, or quantity that can be measured or counted
Def Independent Variable
Typically manipulated by the researcher
Dependent Variable
Variable of interest, measured to determine effect of the independent variables
Def Statistic
A data point that is calculated on the sample data
eg. Sample SD
Def Parameter
A number that is calculated from the population
eg. Population SD
Def Correlational Studies
Studies conducted to determine if 2 or more variables are related
Def Parameter Estimation
Studies which are interested in a population parameter and utilizing statistics to estimate that parameter
