Figurative language

Hyperbole
exaggeration phrase or statement used for emphasis or effect.
Simile
a comparison of two things for dramatic effect using like or as e.g. as
brave as a lion.
Metaphor
a comparison of two elements for dramatic effect e.g. her eyes were diamonds
Symbolism
a style of expression using images and suggestion to express ideas, emotions, and states of mind.
Motif
a dominant or recurring idea.
Rhetorical Questions
a question posed to the reader that does not need to be answered.
Allusion
an indirect or passing reference.
Tone
the general character or attitude of a text.
Stage Directions
the parts of a script around the dialogue that help describe the action, setting and character.
Protagonist
the main character or hero of a story.
Antagonist
a character that contends or exposes the protagonist.
Foreshadowing
a warning or indication of future events.
Rhetoric
language designed to motivate, inform, or persuade.
Semantic field
When a group of words all link to one overall theme.
