Allusion
An expression to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly
Blank verse
Regular metrical, unrhymed lines, almost always in iambic pentameter
Conceit
A type of extended metaphor that compares 2 very unlikely things well
Didactic
Intended to teach, has moral instruction
Dramatic irony
When the audience knows something the character doesn’t
Dramatic monologue
A poem in the form of a speech or narrative where the speaker reveals an aspect of their character whilst referring to a specific series of events
Dramatic tension
Keeping an audience hooked
Narrative stance
The sense we get from from the writer that a narrator is taking a particular view about something
Paradox
An absurd or contradictory statement that may have some truth
Syntax
The arrangement of words phrases to create well formed sentences
