What is an imperative?
A command
What is a proper noun?
A noun that serves as the name for a specific place, person or thing. They always have capital begin with a capital letter
What is a metaphor?
A device used in descriptive writing that compares something directly to something else in order to create an image or resemblance. It says that a noun is something which it is not.
What is a triplet/ rhetorical triplet?
A group of three sentences, lines or individual words
What does euphonic mean?
Combing words that sound pleasant together of are easy to pronounce, usually because they contain lots of consonants with soft or muffled sounds (like L, M, N and R) instead of consonants with harsh, percussive sounds (like T, P and K). Rhyme and rhythm C’an also create euphony.
What does polysyllabic mean?
Word which have two or more syllables
What does nomenclature mean?
The act/process of naming something
What does patronymic mean?
A name taken from the name of a father or ancestor e.g Johnson
What does construal mean?
The way a person understands the world or a particular situation
What is a rhetorical shift?
A literary device where there is a shift in the mode or tone of a piece of writing
What is a metaphor?
A comparison made between things which are essentially not alike.
What is figurative language?
Language that uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation. When a writer uses literal language, he or she is simply stating the facts as they are. Figurative language, in comparison, uses exaggerations or alterations to make a particular linguistic point. It is very common in poetry but also used in prose and nonfiction writing as well.
What is a simile?
Like and metaphor and often uses the words like or as
What is personification?
When something that is not human us given human-like qualities, this is known as personification
What is a passive verb?
Was followed by the verb
What does intertextuality mean?
The shaping of a text’s meaning by another text. It is the interconnection between similar or related works of literature that reflect and influence an audience’s interpretation of the text
What is pathetic fallacy?
A kind of personification that gives human emotions to inanimate objects of nature; for example, referring to weather features reflecting a mood
What is hyperbole?
Exaggerating, often in a humorous way, to make a particular point is know as hyperbole. One example of hyperbole would be to say ‘My eyes widened at the sight of the mile-high ice cream cones we were having for dessert’
What is lexical borrowing/loan words?
The process by which a word from one language is adapted for use in another
What is an idiom?
An idiot is an expression used by a particular group of propose with a meaning that is only known through common use. One example of an idiom would be to say ‘I’m just waiting for him to kick the bucket’. Many idioms that are frequently used are also considered clichés
What does symbolism mean?
Symbolism occurs when a noun which has meaning in itself is used to represent something entirely different. One example of symbolism would be to sue an image of the American flag to represent patriotism and a love for one’s country.
