(overarching term) a short work that is longer than a short story but much shorter than a novel. The story is usually centered around one plot with few characters
novella
(overarching term) a transformation from one form to another (ex: a caterpillar turns into a butterfly)
Metamorphosis
(overarching term) a term or eponym used to describe the bizarre, abstract, unusual, existential, and depressing aspects of writing.
Kafkaesque
(overarching term) a story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one.
allegory
(overarching term) the artistic movement that occurred after WW1 where reality and imagination elements collide in literature. Events that occur within the text may be unnatural or irrational in nature but seem normal to that society (ex: Gregor turning into a bug).
surrealism/magical realism
(existentialism) the search for purpose and meaning in one’s life in an often harsh and cruel world. To have an existential “crisis” is to not know your place in the world and to feel a sense of loss of purpose.
