Anatomy
The study of the structure and relationships between body parts
Physiology
The science of how the structures in your body come together and function
Homeostasis
The ability to maintain stable, internal conditions despite external changes
Anatomical Position
Standing erect, facing forward, with arms at the sides and palms also facing forward
The Sagittal (or Median) Plane
Divides a body or organ into left and right parts
The Parasagittal Plane
Parallel to the Sagittal Plane but off to one side
The Coronal (or Frontal) Plane
Divides a body or organ into front and back
The Transverse (or Horizontal) Plane
Divides a body into top and bottom
Axial
Describes anything in line with the center of the body (e.g. head, neck, and torso)
Appendicular
Describes anything attached to the axial parts, appendages (e.g. arms and legs)
Anterior (or Ventral)
Describes anything in the front of the body
Posterior (or Dorsal)
Describes anything in the back of the body
Superior (or Cranial)
Toward the top of the body (towards the head)
Inferior (or Caudal)
Toward the bottom of the body (away from the head)
Medial
Structures toward the midline of the body
Lateral
Structures away from the midline of the body
