Terminology and X-ray Description Flashcards
Orthopaedics
What is a sprain?
An injury to a ligament
Graded as 1st degree (microscopic tearing), 2nd degree (partial tear), and 3rd degree (complete disruption)
What is a strain?
An injury to a muscle
Grading is similar to sprains
Define subluxation.
Partial dislocation of a joint
Define dislocation.
Complete disassociation of a joint
What is osteoarthritis?
Degenerative condition of a joint
What is osteochondritis dissecans?
Injury to the joint surface of bone that involves detachment of the subchondral bone and its overlying articular cartilage
Define apophysitis.
Inflammation in a bony prominence at the point of insertion of a tendon
What is tendinitis?
Acute inflammation of a tendon
What is tendonosis/tendonopathy?
Degenerative breakdown of the tendon
Define tenosynovitis.
Inflammation of the sheath surrounding a tendon
What is bursitis?
Inflammation of the synovial sac (bursa) that protects the soft-tissue structures
Define spondylolisthesis.
The abnormal translation of one vertebra with respect to another
What is spondylolysis?
A fracture of the pars inter-articularis of the vertebra, causing spondylolisthesis
What is spondylosis?
Osteoarthritis of the spine
What is abduction?
Movement away from the body’s midline
What is adduction?
Movement toward the body’s midline
Define eversion.
Rotation of the foot and ankle outward
Define inversion.
Rotation of the foot and ankle inward
What is pronation?
Rotary movement at the forearm where the palm rotates from a superior facing position to one facing inferiorly
What is supination?
Rotary movement at the forearm where the palm rotates from an inferior facing position to one facing superiorly
What is the range of motion description in anatomical position?
All joints are at zero degrees
Define varus deformity.
Deformity where the distal portion is angulated toward the midline (i.e. apex lateral)
What is an example of varus deformity?
Bowlegs = genu varus
Define valgus deformity.
Deformity where the distal portion is angulated away from the midline (i.e. apex medial)
What is an example of valgus deformity?
Knock knees = genu valgus
What is arthrocentesis?
Aspiration of synovial fluid from a joint with a needle
Define arthroscopy.
A surgical technique that uses a small camera (endoscope) in a joint space
What is arthrotomy?
Surgical incision into a joint through the joint capsule
What is arthrodesis?
Surgical fusion of a joint
What is open reduction?
Surgical incision with physical visualization of the fracture site or joint
What is closed reduction?
Reduction of fracture with surgery, may be done under x-ray imaging
Define debridement.
Surgical removal of all contamination, ischemic/necrotic tissue and irrigation to decrease bacterial load
What is internal fixation?
Surgical stabilization devices (implants) placed internally, directly on or in the bone
What is external fixation?
Bulk of stabilization device outside of soft tissues and skin, connected to bone with pins or wires
