What is a stoma bag?
A stoma is an opening on the front of your abdomen which made during surgery. It diverts your faeces or urine into a pouch on the outside of your body.
What are the BMI ranges?
•30 = obese
What is cachexia?
Weakness and wasting of the body due to severe chronic illness.
What is a laparotomy?
A surgical incision into the abdominal cavity.
What is an appendectomy?
A surgical operation to remove the appendix.
What is cholecystectomy?
Surgical removal of the gall bladder.
What is cirrhosis and its common causes? (2)
- Scarring of the liver used by continuous, long-term liver damage. It is irreversible and can lead to liver failure.
- Alcohol / hepatitis C
What is ascites?
The build up of fluid in the peritoneal cavity, causing abdominal swelling.
What is hepatitis and its common causes? (2)
- Inflammation of the liver
* viral infection / liver damage caused by alcohol
What is excoriations and pruritus?
- Compulsive skin picking
* Severe itching of the skin
What is cholestasis?
•is the reduction or stopping of bile flow.
What is coeliac disease?
It is an autoimmune condition where the small intestine is hypersensitive to gluten.
What are the common causes of chronic iron deficiency?
- Women with heavy periods
- Pregnant women
- Gastrointestinal blood loss - NSAIDs / Stomach ulcers / gastrointestinal cancer
What is hepatic encephalopathy?
A high level of toxins in the blood due to liver damage.
What is uraemia?
A raised level in the blood of urea and other nitrogenous waste compounds that are normally eliminated by the kidneys
