Simile

Personification
Type of metaphor: when an inanimate object has human emotions or features “ the wind growled”
Zoomorphism
When a human is given animal-like features or actions “ she hissed at her”
Adjective
a word, phrase, or clause that describes a noun or pronoun. E.g old
Adverb
A word phrase or clause that modifies the meaning of a verb , adjective or other adverb. Often end in “ly” E.g quickly

A character that is the source of conflict in a literary work
Assonance
Repeptition of “ a” e.g Anna’s anger
Hyperbole
Extreme exaggeration to add meaning e.g her world had ended
Dramatic irony
When the audience knows something the character(s) do not
Verbal irony
When the speaker says one thing but means opposite
Situational irony
When there us a disparity between what is expected and what actually occurs
Onomatopoeia
Use of a sound

Phrase that consists of two words that are contradictory e.g “living dead”

When the weather reflects the mood

A pattern of a theme in a text
Hamartia
Fatal flaw or error of judgement
Peripeteia
Reversal of of fortune brought about because of the heroes error of judgement e.g the Peripeteia of Macbeth is the point in which he kills Duncan
Anagnorisis
The discovery that the reversal was brought about by the heroes own actions “ we see the tormented figure of Macduff come to recognise the truth in a moment of Anagnorisis”
Hubris
Excessive pride
