Arachaic/Archaism
old language - from an earlier period
Caesura
Pause or break created by a piece of punctuation e.g. semi-colon or full stop.
Clause
part of a sentence, usually separated by commas, that contains at least a subject or a verb.
Complex sentence
sentence with 2 or more clause linked by a conjunction like ‘although’ or ‘because’.
Declarative sentence
States a fact or an argument

The word ‘THE’

Homophone
A word pronounced the same as another but has a different meaning e.g. ‘Sea’ and ‘see’
Imperative sentence
Gives advice or instructions also can express a request or demand
Interrogative sentence
sentence that asks a question
Intensifier
Adverb or adjective used to add force on another adjective, verb or adverb
Monosyllabic word
a word with only one syllable
Non-fluency features
delayed, hesitated or stuttered speech e.g. er, ummm etc
Non-Verbal utterance
a noise made in the place of an actual word to communicate
Intertextuality
Mentioning of other texts within a text
Pre-modifier
an adjective placed before a noun e.g. Blacking church
Phonetic spelling
words spelled the way they sound
politness marker
using language carefully not to offend
polysyllabic word
a word having more than one syllable
salutation
opening of a letter e.g. ‘Dear…’

A clause which provides additional information

connecting a sentence by using conjunctives

when the subordinate clause is at the start of a sentence
