Tooth decay
Early childhood caries
Severe dental caries occurring in young children. Often caused by frequent exposure to liquids high in sugar
Incipient caries
The earliest sign of a new carious lesion
Rampant caries
Sudden, widespread and rapidly progressing caries
Arrested caries
Progression of caries has stopped
Enamel caries
Decay occurring on the enamel of the tooth
Cervical caries
Decay that forms at the gingival margins
Smooth surface caries
Decay that occurs on the smooth surfaces of the tooth
Recurrent caries
Tooth decay that occurs under an exisiting dental restoration
Root caries
Decay occurring on the exposed portion of the root
Radiation caries
Decay as a result of radiation induced dry mouth
Demineralisation
First stage of developing dental caries where calcium and phosphate leave the tooth
Remineralisation
Calcium and phosphate return to the tooth enamel
