Terminology Flashcards
Distribution of electrons of an atom
Electron configuration
The compound of a metal and non metal, or cation and an anion
Ionic compound
The emission of elementary particles by some atoms when their unstable nuclei disintegrate
Radioactivity
The central part of an atom that contains the protons and neutrons
Nucleus
Tells us the number of atoms of each element in a compound. It contains the symbols of the atoms of the elements present in the compound, as well as how many there are for each element in the form of subscripts
Chemical formula
Made from bonding at least two non-metals
Covalent molecule
A subatomic particle found in the nucleus of atoms, they have no charge
Neutron
An electrically charged atom or group of atoms formed by the loss or gain of one or more electrons
Ion
A substance formed when two or more chemical elements are chemically bonded together
Compound
An ion or group of ions having a positive charge
Cation
The science that deals with the composition and properties of substances and various elementary forms of matter
Chemistry
A substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means
Element
Positive electric charge and mass slightly less than that of a neutron
Proton
A chemical bond that involves the sharing of electron pairs between atoms
Covalent bond
An ion or group of ions having a negative charge
Anion
