Ambiguity
The possibility of interpreting written/spoken words in more than one way. Can be used intentionally/ unintentionally.
Analogy
Another word for comparison.
Anithesis
When opposing ideas/images are used for effect e.g. Man proposes; God disposes.
Antonym
Word that has the opposite meaning to another such as alive/dead.
Bathos
A change in mood, usually from the serious to the more mundane/trivial.
Blank verse
Unrhymed verse that follows a regular metrical pattern-usually 10 syllables to a line.
Cadence
Another word for rhyme.
Caesurae
Pauses within lines of verse.
Complex sentence
Includes 1/more subordinate clauses.
E.g. I bought a new bicycle, which was very expensive, and I cycled home.
Compound sentence
Contains more than one clause linked with a connective word e.g. ‘I bought a new bicycle and I cycled home.
Connotative
The emotional, individual and expressive meanings of a word/expression
Discourse marker
Word/phrase that marks the boundary between topics.
Hyperbole
Exaggeration for effect.
Idiom
Expression that is often informal,figurative, is regularly used by a distinct group of people, which outsiders might have difficulty interpreting at first.
E.g. ‘Spill the beans’, ‘the sky’s the limit’
Linear narrative
A storyline where events clearly follow in chronological sequence.
Minor sentence
Contains no main verb e.g. ‘Ready?’, ‘So what?’, ‘nonsense!’
Omniscient narrator
The storyteller has a complete knowledge of all characters and situations. The story is presented using the 3rd person rather than the 1st person.
Oxymoron
An expression that seems contradictory e.g. ‘Living death’
Tag question
A question usually added to a declarative statement to make it interrogative.
Agenda setting
The ‘setting’/ choice of a topic for a conversation/interaction.
