Alliteration
Repetition of consonant sounds at begin inning of words.
Allegory
Symbolic narrative with details that imply a secondary meaning. Often takes form of a story.
Anapest
Two unaccounted syllables followed by an accented one e.g. com-pre-HEND
Assonance
Repetition of similar vowel sounds in a sentence or a line of poetry or prose
Blank verse
Line of poetry in unrhymed iambic pentameter
Caesura
Strong pause within a line of verse
Closed form
Regularity and consistence in such elements as rhyme, line length and metrical pattern
Couplet
A pair of rhymes lines that may or may not constitute a separate stanza in a poem
Dactyl
A stressed syllable followed by two unstressed ones e.g. FLUT-ter-ing
Elegy
The lyric poem that laments the dead
Elision
The omission of an unstressed vowel or syllable to preserve the meter of a line of poetry
Enjambment
A run-oh line of poetry in which logical and grammatical sense carried over from one line into the next
Epigram
A brief witty poem, often satirical
Falling meter
Poetic meters such as trochaic and dactylic that move or fall from a stressed to an unstressed syllable.
Foot
A metrical unit composed of stressed and unstressed syllables
