Class mobility
The ability to move up or down the social and economic ladder
Class
System of ordering a society, people are divided based on economic/social status
Critical theory
A way of looking at society, that questions, power, inequality, and injustice
Cultural capital
The knowledge, skills and behaviours that help people succeed in society
Diversity
The presence of different people, ideas or cultures in a group
Ethnicity
A group of people who share culture, language, or ancestry
Stereotyping
Assuming that all people in a group are the same, this is often unfair
Marginalized
People who are pushed to the edges of society and given fewer opportunities
Prejudice
Judging people unfairly based on personal bias
Xenophobia
Fear or dislike of people from other countries or cultures
Minority
A smaller group of people with a larger population, often with less power
Hegemony
One group has dominance or control over others
Assimilation
What a person or group adopts the culture of a larger group
Pluralism
A society were different cultures or groups coexist, while keeping their differences
Eurocentrism
Senior pink culture as superior to others
Social mobility
Moving up or down in social or economic status
Sexual orientation
Who someone is attracted to romantically or physically
Gender
Social and cultural roles, behaviors, and identities linked to be male and female
Identity
How a person sees themselves and what makes them unique
Equality
Treating everyone the same regardless of differences
Equity
Giving people what they need to be fair, even if it’s different from others
Intersectionality
How different parts of a person’s identity combined to shape their experiences
Multiculturalism
A society that includes and values different cultures
