Terminology Flashcards
Solution
A mixture of a solvent and a solute
Solvent
Something that dissolves in a solution, in the body the solvent is water Solute
Solute
The least amount of ingredients/molecules in a solution Hydrophilic
Hydrophilic
Water loving molecules that are able to be dissolved in water (soluble)
Hydrophobic
Non water loving molecules that are unable to be dissolved in water (non soluble)
Passive transportation
No energy used
Active transport
Uses energy
Tonicity
Ability of a solution to change size/shape of cells by altering the amount of water contained within it
Isotonic
When a solution has the same solute and water concentrations, with no water movement
Hypotonic
When a solution contains less solutes in the ECF and more in the ICF
Hypertonic
When a solution contains more solutes in the ECF and less water in the ICF
