Terminology Flashcards

1
Q

Maximal Intercuspal Position

A

The complete intercuspation of the opposing teeth independent of condylar position, sometimes referred to as the best fit of the teeth regardless of the condylar position-also called maximal intercuspation

Q

Centric Occlusion

A

The occlusion of opposing teeth when the mandible is in the central relation. This may or may not coincide with the maximal intercuspal position.

Q

Centric Relation

A

The maxillomandibular relationship in which the condyles articulate with the thinnest avascular portion of their respective disks with the complex in the anterior-superior position against the shapes of the articular eminencies. This position is independent of tooth contact. This position is clinically discernible when the mandible is directed superior and anterioly. It is restricted to a purely rotary movement about the transverse horizontal axis.

6
Q

Non-working side

A

The side of the mandible that moves toward the median line in a lateral excursion. The condyle on that side is referred to as the nonworking side condyle

Q

Retruded Contact Position

A

Guided occlusal relationship occuring at the most retruded position of the condyles in the joint cavities. A position that may be more retruded than the centric relation position

16
Q

Transverse Horizontal Axis (Hinge Axis)

A

An imaginary line around which the mandible may rotate within the sagittal plane

17
Q

Menton

A

The most inferior part of the mandibular symphysis

18
Q

Y (growth) axis

A

Angle between line formed by sella and gnathion and the frankfort plane-indicates the position of the chin

19
Q

Occlusal Vertical Dimension (VDO)

A

The distance measured between two points (one of which is on the middle of the face or nose and the other of which is on the lower face or chin) when the occluding members are in contact in maximal intercuspal position

20
Q

Rest Vertical Dimension (VDR)

A

The distance between two selected points measured when the mandible is in the physiologic rest position

21
Q

Physiologic rest position

A

The mandibular position assumed when the head is in an upright position and the involved muscle, particularly the elevator and depressor groups are in equilibrium in tonic contraction, and the condyles are in neutral, unstrained position

22
Q

Interocclusal rest space (IRS)

A

The difference between the vertical dimension of rest and the vertical dimension while in occlusion (VDR-VDO = IRS)

23
Q

Horizontal Overlap

A

the projection of teeth beyond their antagonist in the horizontal plane

24
Q

Vertical overlap

A

the vertical relationship of the incisal edges of the maxillary incisors to the mandibular incisors when the teeth are in the maximum intercuspation. 2mm VO
