epizeuxis
Rhetorical speech where a word or phrase repeated in immediate succession, no intervening word
Iambic pentameter
ten syllables arranged in five metrical feet (iambs) with the second syllable stressed, mimicking a heartbeat
Blank verse
Metrical form but no rhyme
Soliloquy
act of speaking one’s thoughts aloud when by oneself or regardless of any hearers, especially by a character in a play
prose
conversational way of speaking which doesn’t have a set rhythm or structure. Writing is full away across the page
tragic hero
protagonist of a tragedy
Aristotles rules:
● Noble birth
● Experience a reversal of fortune
● Must have an Hamartia or fatal flaw
● The final outcome must be tragic and the hero must die at the end
rhyming verse
metrical form that rhymes throughout
deus ex machina
filling in plot holes - plot device used when a seemingly unsolvable conflict or impossible problem is solved by the sudden appearance of an unexpected person, object, or event
rhyming couplets
two lines written in iambic pentameter that end in the same sound, or a rhyme. They are o en used to sum up the end of a character’s speech
peripeteia
sudden reversal of fortune or change in circumstances, especially in reference to fictional narrative
stichomythia
dialogue in which two characters speak alternate lines of verse
exposition
introduces the key background information of a narrative - sets the play
hamartia
fatal flaw leading to the downfall of a tragic hero or heroine
denouement
conclusion after the climax of a narrative in which the complexities of the plot are unraveled and the conflict is finally resolved
anagnorisis
point in which a principal character recognizes or discovers another character’s true identity or the true nature of their own circumstances
