What is an acronym?
An abbreviation formed from the first letters of each word. E.g LOL, OMG!
*Pronounced as it’s own word.
What is an Americanism
A word/expression of American english E.g color instead of colour
Anadiplosis
Where the ending of one clause is the start of the next one.
Anaphora
Repeating a word or phrase at the start of several sentences. E.g You are kind. You are smart, and you are important
Anecdote
A short story about a real person/real events included in a narrative
Anitithesis
Two juxtaposing ideas used for rhetorical effect
E.g It was the best of times, it was the worst of times
Antonyms
words with opposite meanings
E.g destroy/create
Aphorism
A consise expression of truth/principle E.g “Actions speak louder than words.”
Assonance
Repeating vowel sounds
E.g The sly snake slithered
Backchanneling
Minimal responses to show engagement.
E.g “Mhm”, “Yeah”. “Oh really?”
Bathos
A sense of anticlimax at the end of a narrative
Cacophanous
Harsh sounding words
Chiaroscuro
The way light/shade is presented
Chronalogical
Presented in order
Cliche
An overused expression
Closed audience
Listeners physically present when a text is created
Contraction
An abbreviated version of a word.
E.g Cannot = Can’t
Declarative
A sentence in a form of a statement
Deixis
Words that need context to be fully understood. E.g ‘This’ or ‘That’
Deontic modal verbs
Verbs that allow permission/obligation E.g ‘Should’, ‘may’, ‘must’
Dialetic
Lexical form based on Geographical region. E.g ‘Wee’ -Scotland. ‘Sidewalk’ -America.
Didatics
Having an Instructive/teaching purpose
E.g The inspectors speech in* An Inspector Calls*
Diagetic sound
Sound where the origin is seen/implied in the film. E.g footsteps, gunshots, explosions
