Terminology Flashcards
Saprophytic
Growing alone.
An organism, such as a fungus or a bacterium, that lives and feeds on dead and decaying plant and animal matter.
Immunomodulation
Immunomodulation is the adjustment of immune response to a desired level, as in immunopotentiation, immunosuppression, or induction of immunologic tolerance.
Ectomychorizzal
Growing together.
A symbiotic association of fungi with the feeder roots of higher plants in which both the partners are mutually benefited and indeed the association appears to be significant for the existence of both the partners.
Symbiotic
Involving interaction between two different organisms living in close physical association.
Amensalism
A non-symbiotic, asymmetric interaction where one species is harmed or killed by the other, and one is unaffected by the other.
Endophytes
Fungi living inside of the leaves.
Sclerotium
A hardened fungal mass that holds food reserves.
Beta Glucans
A type of complex polysaccharides that have a vast range of potential health benefits.
