Terminology Flashcards
Accreditation Standards
Establishes criteria for institutional quality and sets forth evaluation of post secondary career schools and colleges.
Antibody
a blood protein produced in response to and counteracting a specific antigen (toxins)
Autoclave
known as steam sterilizers, a machine that uses steam under pressure to kill harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores on items that are placed inside a pressure vessel
Bacillus Atrophaeus Spores
Spore-forming bacterium that has been established as industrial bacteria in the production of biological indicators for sterilization.
Bioburden
The number of bacteria living on a surface that has not been sterilized
Biofilms
a thin, slimy film of bacteria that adheres to a surface.
Biological Indicator (BI)
Living organisms that are used as a potential tool to monitor the changes of either +/- in environmental health impact.
Bloodborne Pathogens
Infectious microorganisms in human blood that can cause disease in humans
Bowie-Dick type test
Helps ensure that air is properly removed from sterilization chambers, as a result loads are fully penetrated with steam
CDC
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention serves as the national focus for developing and applying disease prevention and control, environmental health, and health promotion and health education activities designed to improve the health of the people of the United States.
Central Instrument Processing Area
Area that receives, clean, decontaminate, package, and sterilise medical devices that can be distributed
Chemical Indicator
A substance that gives a visible sign, usually by a colour change, of the presence or absence of a threshold concentration of a chemical species
Chemical Vapor Sterilization
chemical-vapor sterilization involves heating a chemical solution in a closed pressurized chamber.
Cleaning - Manually
The physical removal of all visible soil or gross debris from an item to render that item safe for handling.
Cleaning -Mechanical
The mechanical cleaning action of washer/disinfectors relies on spray arm technology with pressurized water to help clean surgical instruments or other reusable devices.
Contaminated
the action or state of making or being made impure
Control Biological Indicator
Biological indicators, or spore tests, are the most accepted means of monitoring sterilization because they assess the sterilization process directly by killing known highly resistant microorganisms
Decontamination
removes or destroys infectious agents; to make clean
Disassembly
To take or break down a item for cleaning
Disinfectant
eliminates many OR all microorganisms, except some bacterial spores
Distilled water
both organic and inorganic substances have been removed from the water
Dry heat sterilizers
using blown hot air to eliminate or deactivate all forms of life inside the chamber of an industrial oven
Ethylene oxide sterilization
Used to sterilize critical items (and sometimes semicritical items) that are moisture or heat sensitive and cannot be sterilized by steam sterilization.
Event Related Packaging
any event that compromises the integrity of the barrier enclosing the sterilized material
Flash sterilization
Flash sterilization is a modification of conventional steam sterilization (either gravity, prevacuum, or steam-flush pressure-pulse) in which the flashed item is placed in an open tray or is placed in a specially designed, covered, rigid container to allow for rapid penetration of steam.
Germicide
A substance or other agent that destroys harmful microorganisms; an antiseptic.
Huck Towel
Huck towels, also often referred to as surgical towels, are 100% cotton, very absorbent, and extremely low lint cloths
Geobacillus stearothermophilus spores
a thermophilic, aerobic bacterium, which produces heat-resistant spores.
Implantable Device
an instrument that is either wholly or partially introduced into the body.
Mechanical indicators
Assess a cycle’s temperature, pressure, and time by noting gauges or displays on the sterilizer
Microbicidal
Any substance or process that kills germs
Pasteurization
heating a liquids to less than 212f for a few minutes or even seconds, and then cooling it immediately
Sagittal
Vertical; left and right
Midsagittal
Directly down the middle
Parasagittal
Uneven down the middle
Oblique
Any angle not parallel or right angle
Frontal
The front side of the body
Transverse
Horizontal; upper and lower
Superior
Upper body
Cornal plane
Divides the front and back side
Inferior
Lower body
Anterior
Front side
Posterior
Back side
Lateral
Side
Medial
Middle of the body
Prone
Face down
Supine
Face up
Distal
Farthest away from point
Proximal
Closest to point
Anatomy
Study of structure & relationship between body parts
Physiology
Study of the function of body parts & body as a whole
OSHA
Occupational safety health administration
PPE
Personal protection equipment
What is Asepsis
The absence of microorganisms that cause disease.
What is the Aseptic technique
Any activity or procedure that prevents infection or breaks the chain of infection
What is Surgical Asepsis?
Procedures preformed to eliminate or prevent the presence of all microorganisms into an area.
What are the principles of Asepsis ?
Know what is CLEAN
know what is DIRTY
know what is STERILE
