Terminology Flashcards
What is an element
A pure substance.it cannot be broken into other types of substances
What is an atom?
Smallest particle of an element that still has the properties of that element.
What is a molecule?
A group of atoms linked by strong covalent bonds, where electrons are shaved between atoms.
What are functional groups?
A group of atoms linked by strong covalent bonds that tend to function in chemicalreactions as a single unit.
What is a cell?
The smallest unit of a living thing.
What is an organelle?
A membrane enclosed body within trecey which performs a unique function.
What is the cutopiasm?
Provides structure to the cell, it is the site of manymetabolic reactions and is where organelles are found.
What is the plasma membrane?
Separates the contents of the cell from the environment, it also requiates the passage of substances into and out of the cell.
What is the nucleus?
The nucleus houses DNA and directs synthesis of ribosomes and proteins and contain chromosomes. RNA is made in the nucleus from the DNA and chromosomes
What is the rough endoplasmic reticulum
Modifies proteins and makes phospholipids for the cell membrane
What are ribosomes
Conducts protein synthesis, contains RNA and protein clusters of small dots within the cell.
What is the smooth endoplasmic reticulum
Synthesis lipids and stores calcium ions.
What is the Golgi apparatus
Receives products in vesicles, sorts and modifies lipids and proteins and releases the modified molecules in vesicles.
What is the vesicle?
A membrane bound sacthat is responsible for the storage and transportation of molecules.
What are lysosomes?
Recycle worn-out organelles and conduct the destruction of the disease causing micro-organisms.
