The term is most often used to apply to mixers. In essence, it means to tip in just a little.
If you are pouring from a gun, a quick tap.
Usually between 0.5 - 1 oz
Float
swirl of alcohol poured onto the top of the drink
Sink
when syrup sinks to the bottom
Perfect
As in a Martini
Equals amount of Sweet and Dry Vermouth
Dirty
Add 1/2 oz of Olive juice
Extra dirty/filthy
Add about 1 - 1.5 oz olive juice
Dry
As in vodka or Gin Martini
Means less Dry Vermouth. Instead of 1 oz use 0.5 oz
Extra Dry
As in vodka or Gin Martini
Little to no vermouth. Swirl the glass or shaker with dry vermouth then dump.
Up
Shake or Stir, strain in a Martini Glass
On the rocks
Over ice
Straight up/neat
alone in a rocks glass, bucket, or snifter
Tall
In a taller glass with more mixer
