Terminology Flashcards
Pure Substances
Pure substances are made up of one type of matter, atoms and particles. They can be further categorised to elements or compounds.
Mixtures
Mixtures are a matter which have been materialized by two or more substances/elements, these substances are not chemically combined and therefore, can be separated by physical means. Mixtures are either Heterogeneous or Homogeneous. This means substances within Homogeneous mixtures being uniform amongst one another, the distribution proportional. Per contra Heterogeneous mixtures are diverging, this would cite upon these substances being unalike furthermore, the substances are not distributed evenly and can be identified maneuvering amongst one another.
Element
Pure Substances, can’t be separated by any means
Solution
Specific type of mixture where one substance is dissolved into another
Solute
Part of a solution: substance that is being dissolved by another substance
Solvent
Part of a solution : substance that dissolves the solute
Soluble
Able to dissolve
Insoluble
Unable to dissolve
Suspension
A mixture between a liquid and the particles of a solid. The particles don’t dissolve and the liquid is mixed up so the particles are spread throughout the liquid. You are able to identify physical configurations of the solid within the liquid ie: sand in water
Concentrated
When the proportions of the solute and solvent are different. There is more solute than solvent.
Dilute
In a solution there is more solvent that solute.
