Declaration of Independence
document that was approved by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, and that announced the separation of 13 North American British colonies from Great Britain.
Social Contract Theory
A voluntary agreement between the government and the governed. It is a philosophy/theory that allows those who are governed to have a government the authority of the state over the individual.
Thomas Jefferson
The principal author of the DOI (1776) and later became the third President of the United States (1801-1809), he was also born in Virginia. Prior to his presidency, was also the Secretary of State in President Washington’s Cabinet.
Thomas Paine
Wrote “Common Sense”, a 47 page pamphlet that advocated for independence from Great Britain to the Thirteen Colonies. Published in 1776. it challenged the authority of royal monarchy and encouraged the colonies to fight for their independence and detachment from Britain.
Articles of Confederation
A governing document that formed the union of thirteen sovereign states in which the states were supreme, not the union. It was the Thirteen Colonies’s first frame of government.
U.S. Constitution
the fundamental law of the U.S. federal system of government and a landmark document of the Western world.
James Madison
known as the “Father of the Constitution”, he was the fourth President of the United States (1809-1817), also being born in Virginia. He contributed greatly to ratification of the Constitution.
George Washington
First president of the United States and also the Commander in Chief of the Continental Army.
Ratification
The act of giving or signing formal consent to certain documents that makes the agreement between the parties valid.
Amendment
A change in the words or meaning of a law or document.
Bill of Rights
The first ten amendments in the U.S. Constitution in relation to the citizen’s right from the government.
Framers
Federalism
A system of government in which territory is controlled by two levels of government, such as power between the national and state government. It unites separate states.
Limited Government
The principle in the constitution that limits the government’s power.
Separation of Powers
The division of power between the several forms of government into branches. It is used to make sure that one branch of government is not too powerful or dominant over the others.
