What is the environment
The environment is everything around us
What is geography
Geography is the study of the environment
The environment is divided in to two areas :
The biophysical environment and human environment
The BIOPHYSICAL environment consists of the NATURAL part of our plant :
The atmosphere ( air/ weather ) The hydrosphere ( water ) The lithosphere ( rock ) The biosphere ( life )
The HUMAN environment consisted of the man-made part of our planet and is divided into :
- The built environment. eg: cities
2. The social environment eg: money
We study geography though two dimensions or perspective
- the spatial ( what,where,why/how)
- the ecological ( human impacts )
Geographers study ‘issues ‘ at a local and global scale
Local scale - immediate area
Global scale - the whole world
Here are some of types of maps ;
- land-used maps ( agriculture, forestry )
- weather maps ( weather conditions )
- political maps ( countries, capital cities )
- topographic maps ( physical & human features )
- thematic maps ( ethnic groups, oil resources )
- street maps ( street directory )
MAP essentials include:
- border
- orientation or direction indicator
- legend ( key )
- title
- scale
