Term 3: Unit 1: Population Concepts: pg. 138 - 142 Flashcards
What is birth rate?
Birth rate = number of live births per 1000 people per year.
What can birth rate also be called?
Crude birth rate.
What is death rate?
Death rate = number of people who die per 1000 population per year.
What 2 other names can death rate be called?

What is population growth rate (PGR)?
Population growth rate (PGR) = the rate at which a population changes (increases/decreases) during a period of time (usually a year) in a place.
How do you work out PGR?
PGR = (Births - Deaths) + (Immigrants - Emigrants) PGR = (B - D) + (I - E) PGR = ... + ... PGR = ...
What do immigrants and emigrants make up as?
Migration.
What does Births and Deaths catergorise as?
Natural growth of population.
What does Immigrants and Emigrants catergorise as?
Mechanical growth of population.
What does a positive growth rate mean?
Positive growth rate = population is increasing
What does a negative growth rate mean?
Negative growth rate = population is decreasing
What does a zero growth rate mean?
Zero growth rate = the population has not changed
What is infant mortality rate (IMR)?
Infant mortality rate (IMR) = number of deaths of babies under the age of 1 per 1000 live births in a given population or region over a given period.
What can IMR also be called?
Infant death rate.
What does a high IMR tell people?
That there is:
- Not enough medical services
- Hunger and malnutrition
- Poverty
