Term 3 Appraising Movement Proficiency Flashcards
How can things be measured for proviciency?
Movement skills can be measured for proficiency by assessing the quality, efficiency and outcome of the performance.
What is proficiency of movement?
the achievement or attainment of a movement goal with maximum certainty, minimum energy expenditure and minimum movement time.
How can you assess movement and skill proficiency?
It is possible to assess movement or skill proficiency in terms of both its process, (the quality and efficiency with which the elements of the skill are performed) and,
- outcome (some kind of result, such as a goal, or some form of measurement, such as a distance achieved).
Before applying performance measures, what factors need to be considered?
- individual characteristics of the performer, such as age, size, body type, fitness level and experience
- level of performance (e.g. novice or elite, club, state or national competition)
- performance context (e.g. practice or a game)
- environmental conditions
What is observation used for?
Observation of performance can be used to appraise both the level of skill proficiency during the performance and the outcome or result of the performance.
What is Norm-referenced standards
Norm-referenced standards allow an individual’s score or result to be compared with the performance of a representative group in the same task or test.
What is Criterion-referenced standards?
Criterion-referenced standards interpret an individual’s score or result compared to others of a similar age, gender and so on. Percentile ranking is common.
What can statistical information be used for?
Statistical information obtained from an activity analysis (or games analysis) can also be used to appraise performance.
What is the most common statistical data obtained from games?
- possession skills (e.g. marks or passes received in Australian Rules football)
- disposal skills (e.g. kicks and handballs, including the effectiveness or otherwise of these in Australian Rules football)
- successful and unsuccessful scoring attempts
What does the Qualitative Analysis of Human Movement refer to?
The Qualitative Analysis of Human Movement refers to the process of Observing, Analysing and Appraising Human Movement Performance.
What four key tasks does qualitive analysis usually involve?
Preparation
Observation
Evaluation
Error correction
What is preparation?
involves the coach developing knowledge about the key performance features of a movement or skill, as well as the common errors that performers exhibit.
They gather this information from scientific research, expert opinion and personal experience.
What is observation?
coaches observe athlete performing the skill and gather information about how the individual performed the movement or skill.
What is evaluation?
coaches then evaluate or diagnosis of the desirable (strengths) and undesirable (weaknesses) parts of the movement or skill performance.
What is error correction?
the coach then provides feedback to the athlete on the performance of their skill that the coach diagnosed during the evaluation stage, usually while practising, to improve their performance.
