The belief that life is precious or sacred. For many religious believers, only human life holds this special status.
Sanctity of Life
The process by which different living creatures are believed to have developed from earlier, less complex lifeforms during the history of the earth.
Evolution
A prejudice or bias in favour of the interests of members of one’s own species and against those members of other species.
Speciesism
When a pregnancy is ended so that it does not result in the birth of a child
Abortion
The sperm and egg join together and grow to form an embryo
Conception
A term used to indicate opposition to abortion and support for foetal rights
Pro-Life
A term used to indicate support of the belief that women should have access to abortions
Pro-Choice
The idea that two actions are wrong, but one is less evil than the other and could be permitted.
Lesser of two evils
One that minimises suffering and maximises happiness

Karuna
Is helping someone to die to ease their suffering, especially if the person is suffering from a painful, debilitating and incurable illness
Euthanasia
The person is able to make their own decision about whether or not they want euthanasia.
Voluntary Euthanasia
The patient is unable to make a decision for themselves so the doctor and family make it for them.
Involuntary Euthanasia
Someone takes an action to kill a patient eg gives them an injection or a pill to allow them to die peacefully.
Active Euthanasia
A person is terminally ill and treatment is withdrawn .
