Why were children more useful in some labour than adults?
They could crawl into spaces too small for adults and their hands fitted into small gaps

To pay off their parent’s debts
What were some of the consequences for riots and strikes of the working class for better working and living conditions?
Striking workers were usually fired and, if caught, could be imprisoned or hanged for their actions

What effect did the strikes have?
It created enough fear and sympathy for the working class that labout laws began to be passed that gave workers certain laws
What were some examples of what the laws did/lead to?
.Child labour declining from the middle of the 1800s
.Limited working hours passesd but not taken seriously until the 1847 factories act which set a 10-hour working day limit (children+adults)
What lead to widespread public schooling?
As factory technology improved, there was a need for an educated workforce which lead to widespread public schooling
Why did some people think schools were a bad idea?
Educated workers would want higher pay and be influenced by radical ideas such as as Marxism and Trade Unionism
When did the government begin to provide funding for schools?
From the 1830s
What were schools expected to do?
Instil discipline, order and respect: qualities that were seen as essential for economic and social stability (it was also hoped that this would reduce the cost of prisons and a police force)
One example of how education made workers more efficient?
Workers who coukd read notices abd instruction sheets would be more efficient

Cheaper books and newspapers, and the spread of libraries and museums
