What does the Federal Police do?
The federal police operate Australia wide, enforcing federal crimes set out in federal statute (e.g. The Crimes Act 1914 Cwth or the Criminal Code Act 1995 Cwth).
- Protect individuals against federal crimes
- Covers crimes that cross borders (state or national) and that threaten the nation as a whole.
- Work with other national police forces to protect people from transnational crimes
- Cover child protection online and most online crimes (due to wide reach of internet)
What does the State Police do?
Each state and territory has it own police force which operates within its borders (e.g. NSW = NSW police force). The role of state police is to protect individuals within their borders against crime, specifically enforcing the Crimes Act 1990 (NSW).
- They stop crime before it actually happens.
- They investigate crimes.
- They arrest and prosecute offenders
What are some other Law Enforcement Agencies and what doe they do?
ASIO (Australian Security Intelligence Organisation): To gather information to pass on to government department and police.
Customs Forces: Customs work alongside the federal police to prevent cross-border crimes.
ASIC (Australian Securities Investments Commission): Polices white collar crime or financial crime, and activities of participants in the financial market, including investors and banks.
