Term 2 - Human Geography Flashcards
sustainability
meeting the needs of today without damaging the environment in the future
ecosystem
community of things living together in an area
Deforestation
the removal of trees
adaptation
change to survive in the environment
climate change
long lasting changes to average temperature and rainfall over time
climate
weather
Describe the layers of the rainforest
emergent - tallest trees poking out of canopy
canopy - full of life
understory - darker and cooler
forest floor - large animals e.g. mammals and insects
Causes of deforestation
farming, transport networks e.g. roads, illegal logging, cattle ranches
Describe how an animal and plant adapt to survive in the rainforest
Plants - tree trunks tall and thin so trees can get to sunlights and bark smooth so rain falls to roots
Lianas - vines climb trees to reach sunlight
Animals - sloth uses camouflage and moves slowly to hide from predators, flying frog has webbed hands and feet so can glide from plant to plant.
What are the effects of deforestation?
soil erosion (cause flooding), soil infertility (can’t grow healthy crops), loss of animal habitat, global warming
Name some sustainable management techniques for the rainforest
Logging and replanting
Education
Ecotourism
international agreements
Biome
large naturally occurring community of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat, e.g. forest or tundra.
How have plants and animals adapted to living in the artic?
Seals - blubber, thick fur coats
Plants - mosses and lichens survive in not much soil and less sunlight
