Term 1- Plants Flashcards
Definition of anther
Produces pollen
Definition of filament
Holds up anther
Definition of stigma
Sticky to catch pollen grains
Define style
Holds up stigma
Define ovary
Contains ovules
Define petal
Bright coloured to attract instects
Difference between cross pollination and self pollination
Self pollination- occurs between male and female parts of the same plant
Cross pollination- occurs between two different plants
What’s pollination
When plant reproduce to produce seeds
What is pollination caused by
Wind, insects and other animals
What are producers
Produces are plants or algae that make their own food
How do producers convert materials found in their environment into glucose
Using sunlight
Define photosynthesis
the process by which plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create oxygen and energy in the form of sugar.
How do plants get the carbon dioxide they need
From air through their leaves which moves by diffusion through stomata
What controls the size of stomata
Guard cells so the leaf does not lose too much water from hot, windy, dry conditions
What do fitting cells do
Spongy layer found in the lower part of the plant which lets carbon dioxide reach the other cells in the leaf
Where does photosynthesis occur
Chloroplasts in leafs and sometimes in stems
What does dermal tissue do
Stops plant from losing too much water
What do root hair cells do and where’s it found
Hold plants in place as they grow and absorb water and minerals from soil. It’s found in the outside surface of roots
What do xylem cells do
They run inside stems of plants from their roots to their leaves. The cells die and the ends break down which allows them to form long tubes to carry water upwards for photosynthesis. Xylem transports water from roots to other parts of the plant
