Term 1 Exam revision (2, weathering, land degradation, geomorphic processess etc) Flashcards
What is weathering?
Weathering is the process by which (rocks, soils, or other materials) are broken down over time by natural forces such as water, wind, and temperature changes.
Short answer: weathering the breaking down of rocks over time
What is sedimentation?
Sedimentation is the process by which sediment, which is a mixture of small rock fragments and organic matter, is deposited in a new location.
Sedimentation is typically caused by the movement of water or wind, which carries sediment from one place to another. Sedimentation can result in the formation of new landforms like deltas and beaches.
What is land degradation?
Land degradation refers to the decline in the quality of land, often caused by human activities, which makes it less productive for supporting various forms of life, such as plants and animals. Land degradation can take many forms, including soil erosion, depletion of nutrients, loss of topsoil, desertification, deforestation, and contamination by pollutants.
What is deforestation?
Deforestation is the process of cutting down trees in forests.
It can lead to the loss of valuable habitats, increased greenhouse gas emissions, and reduced biodiversity.
What is geomorphic processes?
Geomorphological processes are the natural forces that shape the Earth’s surface over time. These processes can be physical or chemical, and they can occur on a variety of scales, from the movement of individual particles to the shifting of entire continents. Some examples of geomorphic processes include erosion, weathering, deposition, landslides, earthquakes, volcanic activity, and tectonic plate movement.
Short answer: Geomorphological processes are the natural forces that shape the Earth’s surface over time.
