Term 1-drainage basin Flashcards
Define condensation
Process where water vapour changes to liquid water.
What are cryospheric processes?
processes that affect the total mass of ice
What is a drainage basin?
area that supplies a river with its supply of water.
Define evaporation
the process where liquid water changes to a gas.
define evapotranspiration
total output of water from the drainage basin directly back into the atmosphere
What is groundwater flow?
slow movement of water through underlying rocks
Define infiltration
downward movement of water from surface into soil
what is an interception store
precipitation that falls on the vegetation surfaces or human-made cover is temporarily stored on these surfaces.intercepted water can either be evaporated directly into the atmosphere absorbed by canopy surfaces or transmitted to the ground surface.
what is overland flow
tendency of water to flow horizontally across land surfaces when rainfall has exceeded infiltration capacity of the soil and and all surface stores are overflowing
what is percolation
downward movement of water within the rock underneath the soil surface.
define run-off
all the water that enters a river channel and flows out of the drainage basin.
define stemflow
precipitation intercepted by the canopy that reaches the ground by flowing down stems or stalks.
define throughfall
precipitation that reaches the ground directly through gaps in vegetation canopy and drips from leaves, twigs and stems
define transpiration
loss of water from vegetation through pores on their surfaces
what is water balance
balance between inputs and outputs in a drainage system.
