TERM 1 Flashcards
what is a Biome?
division of biosphere, vegetation and community structure
what is Abundance?
a number of individuals of same species within the area.
what is species interaction? and what are the 3 types of species interaction? and define each
Predation-when one organism eats another organism to obtain nutrients.
symbiosis- where 2 species live together in intimate assiocassion
competition- when 2 species compete for food space or any other limited resource.
what is herbivory?
primary consumer feeds only on plant materials considered predictors of plants
what are the 3 types of symbiosis
1- commenslism- one species bennifits other is nor harmed or helped
2- parasitism- one organism relies heavily on a host to survive doesn’t want to kill a host
3-mutualism- benifitial to both species
what are the 2 types of competition?
intranspecific- same species compete for limited resources.
interspecific- individuals of different species compete for the same resources in an ecosystem (e.g. food or living space).
Allelopathy what is it?
one organism directly prevents the development of a competing organism by realising toxins from either root, gas form leaves or leaves decomposing
define organism
an individual living thing that is made up of cells uses energy, reproduces, responds grows and develops
what is a habitat
is the place a plant or animal lives
what is a community
all the poplations of different species that interact and live in the same place at the same time
what is a autotrophs
can produce its own food supply
what is a detritivores
organisms that ingests non-livingorganic matter
what is a saprotroph
Saprotroph, also called saprophyte, saprobe, or detritivore, the organism that feeds on nonliving organic matter known as detritus.
what is a .species
a group of organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring
what is a trophic levels
each level in a food chain or food web
