Term 1&2 Flashcards
What is needed for photosynthesis?
The plants uses energy from the sun, carbon dioxide and water to make food.
What gives plant their green color?
Chlorophyll
What does the plant do with the food it makes?
It turns it into glucose sugar and than into starch and stores it in its stems, flowers, leaves
Give examples of starch stored in: Fruit Roots Leaves Stem Seeds
Fruit: banana Roots: potato or carrot Leaves: spinach or cabbage Stem: celery Seeds: nuts
In what way do living things meeds plants?
Living needs the oxygen that plants hive off to live.
How many food groups are there? Name them.
Four Carbohydrates Vitamin and minerals Protein Fats and oil
How do we benefit from eating carbohydrates?
It gives us energy for movement and growth
Explain the types of carbohydrates.
Sugar is a form of carbohydrates that releases a lot of energy quickly. If energy not used up it turns into body fat.
Starch is better because it releases energy slower and for longer.
Give examples of starch and sugar.
Rice, potatoes and bread are starch.
Fruits are natural sugar and cool drink and jams are processed sugar.
Which form of carbohydrates has more nutrients?
Starch has more nutrients and sugar has more energy.
Why is protein so important to include in our diet?
It helps build, grow and repair our bodies.
It strengthens our immune system and gives us muscles.
If you are feeling sick. What will you eat to help your immune system fight the germs?
A lot of protein
In what parts of your body will you find protein?
Bones, hair, skin and nails
Why is ted blood cells and protein so important?
The protein helps make red blood cells that carry oxygen from our lungs to the rest of our body.
Front what food group do we get the most energy from?
Oils and fats
How does oils and fat benefit us?
They form a protective layer in our bodies protecting our organs and keeps animals warm.
Are all oils and fats healthy?
No. Healthy fats we get from avocado, sardines, nut and sunflowers.
Unhealthy fat is called saturated fat from meats
Where do we get the vitamin and minerals we need ?
We get it from the foods that we eat. Like proteins, carbohydrates and oils.
Why is vitamin and minerals so important?
It helps our immune system, gives us strong eyesight, teeth and bones.
If a product has a lot of calories, is it good or bad for our bodies? Explain your answer.
A lot of calories mean a lot of energy. So if the energy is not used up it will turn into body fat that is bad for us.
What is sodium and what does it to do our bodies?
It’s salt. Too much of salt increases our blood pressure.
What does a diet mean?
The different food we eat everyday
Why is 6-8 glasses of water good for u?
Gives us energy, keeps and cleans our blood vessels clean and healthy and avoids constipation.
How does eating fruit, vegetables and grains help our digestive system?
They have a lot of fibre. Fibre pushes out the waste from our digestive system.
Mixing 2 or more things together is called a ……
Mixture
Name the 5 ways to separate mixtures.
Separate by hand Sieving Filtering Settling Decanting
Whats the difference between a mixture and a solution?
A mixture is 2 or more things mixed together.
A solution is a mixture but u can’t see the different substances because it dissolved
Explain how 2 substances dissolves.
When their particles spread and mix evenly into each other
If a mixture is evenly spread we say the mixture is….
Uniform
Is you put sugar in a cup of tea. What is the sugar called and what is the tea called and why?
Sugar is the solute and the tea is the solvent. A solute can dissolve into a liquid and the tea is the liquid it dissolved into
Give an example of a soluble and of a insoluble.
Soluble: sugar or salt
Insoluble: beans orbrice
Five 2 examples of a solution.
Solvent +. Solvent
Liquid. +. Liquid
Solvent. +. Solute
Liquid. +. Solid
What is solubility?
How well a substance can dissolve
What’s the difference between melting and dissolving
Melting the substance stays the same only the state changes.
Dissolving the type of substance changes
How can some solutions be separated?
By evaporating and crystallization and filtering
Explain crystallization
When a liquid evaporates from the solution and the solute that is left behind is called crystallization
Explain filtering
When a solution is passed through filter paper and the solute doesn’t pass through
